- VHS caught on when
- a) the six-hour recordable tape came out (effectivly squashing
- Beta as a competitor, at the same time) and
- b) the price of VHS decks hit the impulse purchase price point
- (about $300) (remember the early "piano key" VHS decks that weighed
- about 50 lbs. and cost over $1000?)
-
- Personally I think these "Internet in a box under $500 hook it up
- to your teevee" machines ain't gonna be such a good thing. Have you
- ever tried to read 80 column text on a television? NTSC video isn't
- designed for it at all. HDTV will change that but whenever the
- HDTV standards are finally sorted out and sets go into mass
- production we're back to the $1000 price point again for a few
- years :-/
